Child of Stone
Old graveyards have always interested me, mainly because of the amazing variety of monuments. More modern graveyards have restrictions over the size and variety of monuments but luckily that wasn’t always the case. Charleston has several really nice and really old graveyards and the one where this particular picture was taken, Magnolia Cemetery, happens to have graves from the 1700’s all the way up to today. Talk about variety.
This particular monument was obvious for a small child and has to be one of the most remarkable ones I have ever seen. In case you were wondering I blurred the name.

Talking about the type and size of monuments in graveyards. Earlier there was no restriction on the size and shape of the monument but now there are a lot of restrictions on the size and shape. There are a lot of graveyards which have really old monuments also.

Thanks for this post. I thought I was the only weirdo that loved cemeteries.
I especially love taking peaceful walks in them with my boyfriend. I used to take my dog until I found out they aren’t allowed in my particular cemetery.
I have also been to cemeteries in Portugal and they are even more amazing. Lots of tile work and custom stone carvings. I think they make great photography.
I think art is more special when it’s not isolated in an indoors gallery.

The old time people used to pay more attention on so many other things because they really didn’t have much to do at a time. As a result we are able to get so many beautiful things now.

I’m going to be honest and throw this out there … that monument terrifies me. I don’t want to see a ghost baby.

I have to say that tombstone is a little spooky to me. I don’t think I could put that on the tomb of a loved one of mine. It is defintely unique though

you’re right, this graveyard is really different and outstanding. it has a lot of creativity in it. it’s really just beautiful.

Its a very interesting hobby. All humans are not the same. But though one can get a bit scared when you mentioned that this is your hobby. Ancient graveyards are a real treat to watch as they have beautifully carved graves and structures.

You mean the dead child wasn’t under the earth, it was in the inside of the stone bath tube?

A lot of old monuments show a lot more craftsmanship of an individual nature than what we have now. This is a prime example. This is pretty interesting. Thanks for the pic.

This is great. i know it may sound morbid, but I like looking at old headstones. I think you can tell a lot about the person and the people who loved them. Reminds me when I go to the Haunted House ride in Disneyland and they have the funny headstones there. Thanks for sharing.

While I have no problem with cemeteries and find looking at tombstones interesting, the one in this particular picture creeps me out. Is that a bathtub, or a bassinet?
The picture is nice, it’s the subject that is a bit creepy.

@kangomommy
It is a bassinet. Actually that is what caught my attention. Such a unique idea for a tombstone. Thanks for commenting.

@Erp
I agree the old monumnets are really amazing. So much better than a simple marble square.

What a freaky gravestone. No doubting it may appeal to some people. But it gives me the chills. Sorry!

@Bape,
It is kind of freaky. Thanks for the comment.

Great site! I love the quotes that rotate on your page. Is there a down loadable plugin?

Creepy, but at the same time somewhat elegant. Definitely makes you appreciate the craftsmanship.

@Hiram,
No it isn’t actually I just plugged the quotes into a the “bloglist” and it randomly displays one entry from that list at every refresh. I can post the code if interested.

That face is very interesting in the picture. Things like that make you wonder about the family history and the inspiration do add an element like that to a grave site.

Gravesites have always been spooky to me, yet in a weird way, inspiring. You know, like one of those things that make you think about your life and how you better make some kind of impact while you’re here because once you’re hanging out in the graveyard, it’s curtains, dude. Just a thought…

Old grave stones and cemeteries are great…and if you havent priced the new ones…OUCH, will be your reactions.! Marble is top dollar!
I recently was looking up some Jewish cemetries in Europe…for an article I was going to use in my blog post. My favorite grave yards were around Prague.
I was reading somewhere that people are stealing crosses from abroad and coming to sell them here.
NOW, that is what I call creepy!
Thanks for the visit…come see me some time,

I love going to cemetaries. I just love to walk around and look at all the graves and read them. The most unusual one that I’ve been to was in someone’s back yard. It was an old pioneer cemetary and they sold the surrounding land for houses.

I do not like cemeteries, but this piece is sculpture is truly amazing. Its like the baby is not in the grave but in the cradle itself which is very beautifully crafted and made with so much of love for the child.
